Dairy Farm Induction Program
The Dairy Farm Induction Program funded by the Victoria Government will assist to safely, effectively and rapidly on-board new dairy farmhand workers and provide opportunities for people seeking to kick start their career in dairy in Victoria.
The program aims to provide a seamless experience for both dairy farmers and job seekers to access the information they need to successfully gain employment on Victorian dairy farms during COVID-19 and beyond.
This program will provide:
- Rapid and high-quality training in key dairy farm practice areas
- A clear pathway for people seeking new career opportunities through a series of supported activities for employment, skill development and successfully starting work on a farm
- Support for dairy farmers to safely, effectively and rapidly start and train employees in the critical role of farm hand
What’s available to dairy farmers and job seekers?
The Dairy Farm Induction Program will be released in stages.
Working together, the Victorian Government and Dairy Australia will support dairy farmers and job seekers navigating the COVID-19 driven situation and addressing industry workforce needs.
Farmers and job seekers can register employment vacancies and interest in work at the Working for Victoria website
Dairy Passport – an online platform that allows dairy farms to manage & link their farm team to the key tasks that need to be undertaken on-farm. Farmers can create Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) and Policies from templates, customise these to their businesses and share with farm team members via internet connected devices. Employment Starter Kit (ESKi) provides dairy farmers easy access to the information and documents needed to start employing someone.
The Agriculture Workforce Plan provides assistance for worker accommodation and transportation to help fill roles where local people are not available – farmers can register here (includes FAQs and case manager support)
Dairy Australia’s Regional Development (RDP) programs – Murray Dairy, Gipps Dairy and West Vic Dairy are available to provide local support and information regarding workforce and employment. Find your local program here

Milking and Mastitis Management – a new online learning and supported on-farm program introducing new staff to safe animal handling, milking procedures and the prevention and identification of mastitis – enquire at you local RDP here
Pre-employment information for job seekers – online learning package to support job application process, understanding of dairy and the opportunities of a future career in the dairy industry.
Supported transition to working on farm via Dairy Passport – online induction to enable safe and effective onboarding on farm of new staff. Employees will be able to register and access online capability development modules (e.g milking handling livestock, vehicles, chemical handing, equipment use) via Dairy Passport (future release).
Support to farmers to enable on-farm coaching to ensure their workforce of the critical role of farmhand.
Digital CV in Dairy Passport – allows dairy farmers to discuss experience, skills and training when recruiting workers, completing a skills audit on-farm and creating development plans. For new entrants this will enable future employment opportunities and streamline any future employment capability development (future release).

This exciting program will assist dairy farmers to employ and develop people required to operate during COVID-19 restrictions and ensure new workers understand on-farm safety and role requirements through flexible online training.
This program will benefit job seekers looking for an exciting new career in dairy and regional Victoria communities to meet workforce needs and ensure ongoing milk production.
The pathways created through this program will help the dairy industry now and better equip its workforce in the long-term when the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
The Dairy Farm Induction Program is part of the $50 million Agriculture Workforce Plan which seeks to support Victoria’s agricultural industries and provide job-ready workers to meet labour demands.
